How to take care of a new tattoo?

The tattoo is just the beginning – the rest is up to you!

Congratulations! You are planning a new tattoo. Getting it done is just the beginning of the adventure. The next few days are absolutely crucial – your discipline and choice of cosmetics will determine how quickly your skin heals and how intense your design remains.

At Loveink, we believe that skincare should be as clean and natural as your new artwork. That’s why we’ve created a guide to help you get through the healing process smoothly and safely.

Before tattooing – your 48 hours before the tattoo:

Hydration from within (DRINK WATER!) The secret to healthy skin is water. Drink 2-3 litres of water a day, at least 48 hours before your session. Hydrated skin is less prone to swelling. Remember! Skin nourished from within means fewer problems for the tattoo artist and for you.

Prepare your skin externally. Regularly lubricating the area to be tattooed with a specialised cosmetic will soften the epidermis and improve its condition. Our Tattoo Butter works best for this. Apply a thin layer to the future tattoo site every day. Why? Thanks to its natural ingredients (including shea butter and coconut oil), tattoo butter softens and deeply nourishes the skin.

During tattooing – your comfort determines the final quality of the tattoo:

This is where the magic begins, but also the challenge! During tattooing, you have three tasks: drink, eat and listen. Ensuring maximum comfort and discipline during the session is the best way to make your new tattoo look perfect.

Comfortable clothing: wear loose-fitting clothes that easily expose the tattooed area and will not constrict it after the session. The artist and your skin will thank you.

Don’t be hungry: Don’t come on an empty stomach! A drop in blood sugar during the session can lead to dizziness, fainting and tremors, which is a nightmare when doing precision work. Eat a decent meal and keep snacks and a sweet drink in your bag.

Listen to the artist: Your tattoo artist is an expert! When they tell you not to move and to hold a certain position, they are right. This is crucial for clean lines and safety. Cooperation is key.

Drink water (not just before): Remember to drink water regularly during the session. This helps to maintain proper skin elasticity and hydration.

The first few hours: Dressing

After the session, your tattoo artist will apply a professional dressing. Most often, this will be Second Skin – a special, breathable film designed to protect the fresh tattoo for the first few hours.

The time after tattooing is when your body begins the regeneration process – a microscopic protective layer forms, and the skin reacts with slight redness and warmth. This is natural and necessary – do not try to speed up healing or remove the film too early.

How long should you wear the film? Remove regular protective film after a few hours, or leave it on overnight. If you have Second Skin, you can wear it for 1-3 days. This varies depending on your skin, the size of the tattoo and the specific advice of the tattoo artist.

Above all, rest. Give yourself time – avoid exertion, sun exposure and long baths. This is when your skin begins to regener

Care after removing the dressing, i.e. the crucial moment with soap

When it is time to remove the dressing, you must act gently and with an emphasis on sterility. This is the wound’s first contact with the world, so the risk of infection is highest.

Loveink TIP (Use soap… but make sure it’s the right kind!): To make removal comfortable and safe, do it under lukewarm running water using Tattoo Soap Silver. The soap will make it easier to remove the film without tearing or irritation. Why is this necessary? Our tattoo soap not only cleanses but also has antibacterial properties! We have research confirming that it kills up to 93.6% of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, commonly found in our environment.

Remember: Ensuring the highest quality of our cosmetics is our priority. This soap is your first professional barrier in the fight against bacteria. After removing the film, immediately proceed to the regular care of your fresh tattoo.

A moment of rest: Proper drying and ‘breathing’

After gentle cleansing and removal of soap residue, the tattoo is clean but wet. Proper drying is as crucial as washing itself – never rub it!

Drying (Paper towel – YES! Cotton towel – NO!) Only use a clean paper towel for drying. Gently collect excess moisture by touching and pressing. Forget about cotton towels – even clean ones can carry bacteria that your tattoo absolutely does not need.

Once the tattoo is dry, leave it uncovered for 10-15 minutes to allow it to ‘breathe’. This is a crucial moment. You are giving your skin time to regenerate before applying the next layer of cosmetic. Try not to touch it during this time – avoid contact with clothing and dirty hands. After a short break, you can move on to the last and most important step, which is moisturising with natural cosmetics.

Moisturising your tattoo: Choose your Loveink product and care for your tattoo consciously

After the rest and drying stage, you enter the most important, regular part of your tattoo care routine: moisturising. A new tattoo is thirsty for nutrients that support regeneration and help the skin rebuild its protective barrier.

Remember the golden rule! A new tattoo needs a lot of moisturising, but the application must be gentle and sparing. Too thick a layer of cosmetic can ‘suffocate’ the skin and hinder air exchange. Always apply a thin layer of Loveink cosmetic, which will absorb quickly.

No matter what you choose, regular use 3-4 times a day is the key to maintaining the beauty and intensity of your new tattoo!

All our care products are vegan and have been created to take the best possible care of your tattoo.

The first weeks after getting a tattoo: Time for full regeneration

The critical phase is over, but the fight for a perfectly healed tattoo continues! It takes time for the epidermis to regenerate completely and safely – usually about a month. During this time, you need to treat your tattoo with special care.

Maximum moisturising (naturally!): This is the most important rule! Apply a thin layer of your chosen Loveink cosmetic regularly, 3-4 times a day. Treat your skin only with natural cosmetics that support its regeneration, not just moisturise it. Our tattoo cream is your best friend!

Absolute hygiene! Also, remember to use special tattoo soap to wash your tattoo at all times. This protects you from bacteria and helps keep the wound clean. Avoid long baths, sunbathing, solariums and sports for 4 weeks.

Be patient and consistent. The time you devote and natural cosmetics in your care will ensure that your tattoo retains its intensity and beauty for years to come!

Regular skin protection: A tattoo for years to come requires your attention

Congratulations! You have diligently cared for your fresh tattoo during the first critical weeks. However, in order for your artwork to retain its aesthetic appearance and intensity for years to come, regular protection and care are essential.

Daily moisturising: Even a fully healed tattoo loses its lustre when the skin is dry. Once fully healed, the habit of regularly applying a thin layer of Loveink cosmetics (butter, oil, cream) should become permanent. It is a simple, daily activity that supports elasticity and colour depth. Remember that our products are vegan and natural, so they nourish without weighing down the skin.

Sun protection (your must-have!): The biggest enemy of a tattoo is the sun. UV rays destroy pigment and cause colours to fade the fastest. Whenever you go out in the sun, carry Sunscreen SPF50 with you, which not only protects your skin but also the ink on your skin. Our cream has a high PPD of 21.8, which protects against UVA rays that penetrate deep into the skin.

Even if your tattoo is 10 years old, it still needs high protection to maintain its contrast and saturation. A tattoo is an investment in art. Regular care of a fresh (and healed) tattoo with Loveink natural cosmetics guarantees that you will enjoy it for a lifetime!

How to care for a fresh tattoo? Natural care.

A tattoo is not just a decoration — it is a work of art that needs proper care. From the first day after the procedure, you decide how your tattoo will look in a few months and years. A fresh tattoo is an open wound, so it requires gentle cleansing, protection and moisturising. Find out how to care for your tattoo so that it retains its intense colours and perfect appearance for a long time.

Remember – even the best tattoo artist cannot do the care for you. It is you who decides whether your tattoo will look perfect only today or also in a few years.

Why is tattoo aftercare so important?

Every new tattoo goes through a regeneration process – in the first few days, the skin heals and the ink ‘settles’ into the epidermis. It is this moment that determines the final result. Improper aftercare can lead to dry skin, infection or pigment loss.
That is why tattoo care is not just a cosmetic ritual, but the key to the durability and clarity of your ink.

Choose cosmetics created specifically for tattooed skin — preferably natural and vegan. Their gentle formula supports the healing process and does not irritate fresh skin.

What should you avoid after getting a tattoo?

While your tattoo is healing, avoid anything that could damage the regenerating skin:

– swimming in a pool, lake or sea,
– excessive sweating and going to the gym,
– direct contact with the sun,
– scratching or picking at scabs.

UV radiation causes colour fading and irritation. LOVEINK Tattoo Sunscreen SPF 50 – a natural cream with a mineral filter – will help protect your tattoo. The high SPF 50 protects against burns, and the impressive PPD 21.8 protects your tattoo from UVA rays, which are responsible for pigment loss. It provides reliable protection for your skin and ink – every day, all year round.

The mild formulation of Loveink vegan cosmetics will facilitate a nice healing of your tattoos and take care of them in daily care. Thanks to our cosmetics, tattoos will keep their beautiful and fresh appearance for years. We encourage you to take a look at the products available in our store. It is the perfect product to support the regeneration process, ensuring cleanliness, safety and comfort for the skin from day one.

100% VEGAN • Dermatologically tested • Free from parabens and petroleum derivatives

What is the best way to clean a fresh tattoo?

Use gentle, antibacterial products without alcohol or fragrance, such as Tattoo Soap Silver. Loveink soap kills up to 93.6% of dangerous Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, which are common in our environment. Do not use shower gels – they can irritate and remove pigment.

How often should you moisturise a fresh tattoo?

For the first few days, apply a layer of cream 2–3 times a day so that the skin is slightly moisturised but not greasy. Too thick a layer can make it difficult for the skin to breathe and slow down the process.

Can you get your tattoo wet?

NO! Avoid bathing in the bath, swimming pool or hot tub for the first 2–3 weeks. Also refrain from using the sauna and gym. You can only gently wash your tattoo with water in the shower.

When can I return to training or the gym?

It is recommended to wait approximately 7–10 days for the skin to begin healing. Sweat, friction, and tight clothing can irritate the tattoo during this time and cause infection.

What should you do if your tattoo is peeling or itching?

This is a natural part of the healing process – do not scratch, peel or rub the skin with a towel. If your tattoo is itching, apply a thin layer of cream to soothe the skin. If this does not help, contact your tattoo artist.

How long does it take for a tattoo to heal completely?

The first phase lasts about 7–10 days, but complete skin regeneration takes up to 4–6 weeks. During this time, keep the area clean, avoid the sun and moisturise your skin regularly.

Can I use regular lotions or pharmacy ointments?

It is not recommended. Most drugstore lotions contain perfumes or alcohol, which can irritate a fresh tattoo.
It is best to use specialised tattoo cosmetics that are natural, vegan and specifically designed for skin care after a tattoo session.

When does a tattoo look ‘finished’?

When the skin is smooth, without flaking or feeling tight. The colours become clearer and the tattoo looks fresh – this is a sign that the pigment has stabilised in the skin.

Can I sunbathe with a new tattoo?

Absolutely not! Not until the tattoo has completely healed (minimum 4–6 weeks).
After that, always use a high SPF cream, such as Loveink Sunscreen SPF 50 with PPD 21.8, which protects both your skin and the pigment from fading.

How to keep your tattoo looking like new for years?

Even after healing, a tattoo requires regular care.
Moisturise your skin daily and protect it from UV radiation – it is the sun that fades colours the fastest.
Use dedicated tattoo cosmetics that nourish and protect the pigment, such as:
Tattoo Butter – regenerates and maintains skin elasticity,
Tattoo Cream Pina Colada – moisturises and enhances colours,
Tattoo Sunscreen SPF50 – indispensable for sun protection! It protects not only the skin but also the pigment thanks to its high PPD 21.8 rating. This is what protects the colours from fading and prolongs the durability of the tattoo.

With proper care, your tattoo will remain intense, clear and healthy for many years.
